Several drugs have recently emerged as a rapid-acting and effective treatment for mood disorders when traditional medications are ineffective. The treatments are administered under strictly controlled conditions by medical professionals.

At the Braxia Health we treat Major Depressive Disorder, and Bipolar Depression. Individuals Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The long-term efficacies in individuals who have responded to this treatment modality are not yet fully known. Emerging evidence indicates that some individuals remain well for several months. Undoubtedly, there will be some individuals who remain well for longer periods of time. It’s also known that other individuals will require booster sessions to maintain their feelings of wellness. The booster sessions are typically administered approximately once per month, depending on the chosen molecule.

This depends on the drug and will be assessed by our physicians during the intake process. Generally:

Depending on the molecule, the therapy is delivered through intravenous infusion or sublingual lozenge.

IV infusions are given over 40 minutes. Post-infusion, patients will be required to stay up to 30 minutes of recovery time. Patients who receive intranasal treatments are required to stay 2 hours at the clinic. Patients who receive sublingual treatments are required to stay 1 hour; however, many patients require 1.5 – 2 hours to recover post-dose.

This depends on the molecule, but most IV patients undergoing the acute treatment phase will require of 4 to 6 infusions over a course of 2 weeks. For sublingual delivery, the acute treatment phase consists of 6 doses over a course of 4 weeks.

Based on the available evidence, individuals receiving certain molecules begin to report relief of depression within one day of administration of the first infusion. Others may take longer but overall the majority of people who are going to benefit from psychedelic therapy will see a benefit within 1-2 weeks.

You’ll be asked not to eat or drink during treatment. Fasting is required pre-treatment with the length varying based on the route of administration. For intravenous infusions, patients are required to fast for approximately 6-8 hours before the treatment. For sublingual and intranasal doses, patients are asked to fast for 2 hours before treatment.

Depending on the molecule, the most common side effects are dissociation, which is when images appear somewhat distorted. Dissociation can affect up to a third of people during the first infusion. The overall number of people who experience dissociation decreases with each subsequent infusion. It is also noted that some people may have an increase in blood pressure or heart rate during infusion therapy. That will be monitored closely by your healthcare team. Although it is rare, some people may experience changes in liver or kidney function, and/or notice blood in their urine. These are considered rare events and more typically associated with much higher doses of a molecule for longer periods of time and/or people who abuse the molecule.

No. Your initial assessment at the Braxia Health would be covered by OHIP. The overarching aim of your referral of the initial assessment is to clarify and confirm what your diagnosis is and to determine the appropriateness of your current and past treatments, as well as to consider appropriate treatment avenues for you. It is fully expected that many individuals may not be considered appropriate candidates for psychedelc therapy.

The age eligibility for psychedelic therapy at Braxia Health is 18+ years of age.

At this time OHIP does not cover costs for psychedelic therapy.

Some insurers will cover psychedelic therapy. Existing patients are encouraged to speak with clinic staff for assistance in submitting requests for insurance coverage.
